Cosmetic surgery is a very common procedure that offers many meaningful benefits to patients, but it also carries a high risk of serious complications. Patients are often not informed about the risks, which can cause a lot of stress. There are inherent risks to surgery as it is an invasive procedure. Some of these risks are higher than others, however.
Vicarious experience
Vicarious Trauma can be caused by someone experiencing traumatic events through the eyes of a friend. The experience can lead you to Posttraumatic Stress disorder. Professional help can help. People can share their feelings and concerns with family and friends. While it may be difficult to discuss the experience, individuals should avoid taking a loved one's reactions personally. They should try to continue their daily routines and maintain contact with friends and family members.
Self-rated attractiveness
A new study examined the association between self-rated physical attraction and psychological well being among adolescents. Participants were asked how attractive they felt about themselves and their self-reported feelings of self-harm and suicide. Results showed that male adolescents were more attractive than female peers. However, in girls, self-rated beauty was negatively associated to internalized distress. These associations reached statistical significance for girls only, and were not related to suicide ideation or self-harmed behaviors.
Religiousness
New research has shown that religion can have an impact on people's decision whether or not they want to consider cosmetic surgery. Particularly, people who were more religious were less likely have cosmetic surgery than those who weren't. Further research is needed in order to understand the relationship between religiousness, cosmetic surgery risks and cosmetic success.
Household income
A study revealed a link between household income and the likelihood of undergoing cosmetic surgery. The results suggest that individuals with higher incomes are more likely to undergo this procedure than those with lower incomes. The researchers used the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics' measure of gross household income to assess SES. It is widely accepted as a method to evaluate SES. This method has been shown in the past to reveal health disparities among socioeconomic groups.
Liquid silicone facial injections
The popular cosmetic procedure of liquid silicone injections is a popular one, but there are potential risks. Some patients may experience transient bruising and swelling. Others may be subject to serious complications like inflammatory reaction. Also, liquid silicone injectables may move into other parts, causing irreparable damage. In some cases, treatment may cause a heart attack.
Infections
Patients are at risk of infection after cosmetic surgery. Although infections are rare, they can occur despite the use of antibacterial agents. Different microorganisms may cause these infections. Most often they are caused either by Staphylococci (or streptococci). But, there have been reports of infections by non-tuberculous mecobacteria. These infections can be difficult for standard gram staining to detect and are resistant to many antibacterial drugs.
