What's the difference between Botox® and Dysport?

Botox (or Dysport) are two cosmetic injectables which relax and weaken muscles near the injection point. Both are able to block a chemical called "acetylcholine". These neurotoxins reduce muscle contraction, which causes wrinkles.

Dysport is cheaper

Although there are some key differences between Dysport (and Botox), the treatments are very similar. They also cost about the same. The cost of one Dysport unit is about 1/3 of that of one Botox unit. Both neuromodulators can be used to treat the same cosmetic issues.

Although the treatments cost very little, Dysport's results are quicker and last longer. In just two to three days, most people can notice noticeable changes. A single Dysport treatment might require less Botox sessions than multiple Botox treatments.

It diffuses more

Botox and Dysport have different effects on the skin. Botox can stay within the injection site longer and lasts for a longer time, while Dysport spreads better and covers more area. This makes Dysport more effective for treating large areas and requires fewer injectables. Botox can be less effective than Dysport.

Botox and Dysport both have biologic processor proteins. These neuromodulators contain proteins that protect the toxin and maintain its proper functioning. These proteins influence how the toxin diffuses and how it is injected.

It reduces glabella lines

Botox can be used to reduce frown lines or glabellar wrinkles in the forehead. These lines appear above the eyebrows due to the repetitive movement of the brow muscles. Luckily, this injectable treatment is effective at reducing glabellar lines and can prevent the formation of new ones. It also smoothens out existing lines.

Botox can last between three to four months and there is no downtime. The results are noticeable between two and three days after the treatment and continue to last for three to four months. Juvederm can also be used to fill glabellar lines. Juvederm doesn't prevent glabellar line formation, unlike Botox. It works by smoothing existing glabellar lines and takes just 10 minutes. It is ideal for treating stubborn glabellar lines because it lasts for up to three to four months.

It is much more effective

Dysport and Botox are both effective for treating wrinkles, but they have some differences. Dysport is less concentrated and spreads over a large area, whereas Botox is stronger and can be used in smaller areas like the forehead. The main differences are in the amount and length of time they take to work.

Both products can cause swelling and bruising, which can lead to side effects. Dysport is a procedure that can be dangerous for patients. For instance, bruising and swelling are normal, but patients should avoid lying down after the injection. Patients should avoid exercising for at least four hours following treatment. They work the same, but are different structurally and molecularly. Side effects may occur in some individuals.

It is safer

While both Botox and Dysport are effective, they come with certain risks. While both injectables can be used safely, it is important to talk with your doctor about potential side effects before you go under the needle. Botulinumtoxicity is another potential side effect of these neurotoxins. It occurs when the injection spreads to other parts of your body.

Both injections contain the same main ingredient, but the product's trace protein levels differ, making each treatment more effective. Both products are being further researched to find the safer and more effective. Both injections take only minutes to administer, although Botox takes longer to dry. After your doctor has completed the injection, you can go home.
